Lufthansa Miles & More

(331 ratings)

This program was reviewed and rated by our editors in August 2011. Changes in the program past this date are possible, especially program partner information. We recommend you subscribe to the #1 source of frequent flyer information, Inside Flyer Magazine, to get the most current information possible.

Europe's FFP

Lufthansa Airlines was a founding member of the Star Alliance in 1997 along with Air Canada, SAS, Thai Airways and United Airlines and continues as one of the 27 member airlines in the first and largest global airline alliance. There are more than 21,000 daily departures for the Star Alliance from over 1,100 airports in 181 countries.

Miles & More was introduced as the frequent flyer program of Lufthansa in 1993 and is currently the FFP for several European airlines: Air Dolomiti, Augsburg Airways, Contact Air, Eurowings, Lufthansa CityLine, Lufthansa Italia, Lufthansa Private Jet, Austrian Airlines Group, LOT Polish Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Adria Airways, Croatia Airlines, Luxair and Brussels Airlines.

Miles earned for flights vary according to the airline and class of service flown. Domestic flights within Germany on Lufthansa earn a set number of miles according to booking class. L and K fares do not earn miles. W fares earn 125 miles, E, G, H, M, Q, S, T, U and V classes earn 500 miles. B, P and Y classes earn 1,000 miles and C, D, J and Z classes earn 1,500 miles. All booking classes are eligible for mileage accrual on Lufthansa except for the usual of award tickets and deeply discounted tickets.

International European flights earn between 125 and 2,000 miles depending on the booking class and destinations worldwide offer minimum miles of at least 500, 750, 1,000 or 1,500 depending on booking class. Economy class flights earn .5 or 1.5 times the miles flown while business class flights earn two times the amount of miles flown and first class earns an impressive three times the amount of miles flown.

Elite status members at all elite levels receive a 25 percent flight bonus. Most programs offer a higher percentage bonus for elite travelers at higher tiers. For comparison, Star Alliance partner United Airlines offers a 25 percent bonus for the lowest tier elite members and a 100 percent bonus for the top two tiers. Lufthansa chooses to incentivize first and business class flights rather than give all elite members a higher bonus flight mile percentage.

Members earn status miles on Miles & More integrated airlines and Star Alliance airlines as well as a 500-mile minimum. Business class flights earn double the status miles and first class flights earn triple the status miles per flight. Partner airline mileage accrual is set out in the miles earning chart of the airline operating the service and varies by class of service flown with a few flight numbers excluded from earning miles. Airline partners who are not in the Star Alliance offer 125 minimum miles per flight.

Members can also earn miles for hotel stays, renting cars, shopping and through many other partners--more than 250 partners with which to earn and redeem miles. Co-branded credit cards are also offered.

With the full force of the Star Alliance behind it, Miles & More offers its members the world when it comes time to spend their miles and that's only the beginning. Members have many award choices to choose from--from flights to coffee to high-end electronics, there's an award that will appeal to everyone.

Domestic roundtrip flights are 25,000 miles in economy, 35,000 miles in business and 50,000 miles in first class. Within Europe, roundtrip flights are 30,000 in economy and 45,000 in business class. Flights between Europe and North America are 60,000, 105,000 and 170,000 in economy, business and first class, respectively. Flights within North America are 60,000 miles in economy (50,000 for residents of the U.S. if the flight starts in the U.S.), 105,000 in business class and 170,000 in first class.

Round the world tickets are available for 180,000 miles in economy, 325,000 in business class and 480,000 miles in first class. There are also three-regions awards available for 100,000 miles in economy, 185,000 miles in business class and 290,000 miles in first class. Award flight regions include: Europe, North America, Hawaii, Central America and Caribbean, South America, Middle East/Caucasus/North/Central Africa, Southern Africa, India, South East Asia, Central Asia/Far East and Australia/New Zealand/Oceania.

Child award flights at 75 percent of the normal mileage and one-way award flights at 50 percent of the normal mileage are also offered on select Miles & More airlines. If you make your award booking between two weeks and four working days prior to departure, you can save up to 50 percent of the miles normally required with a Fly Smart flight award. For 15,000 miles, you can pay the taxes and fees on your continental Europe flight award (not for long-haul award tickets). Senator and HON Circle members can take advantage of exclusive award offers. "Mileage Bargains" are also offered, which are limited-time award sales.

Upgrade awards are offered as well. Flight upgrades within Europe are 10,000 miles from economy to business class (15,000 miles from discounted economy booking classes). Between Europe and North America, the cost is 35,000 miles from economy to business and 50,000 miles from business to first class. Compare this cost to United Mileage Plus, which offers flight upgrade awards between the U.S. and Europe for 15,000 to 20,000 miles (with some co-pays).

Along with flight and upgrade awards, members of Miles & More can spend their miles for hotel stays, dining in hotels, car rentals, shopping, gift vouchers, magazine subscriptions, events such as sporting events and special awards for children, among so many award offers that we can't go into detail about them all here. Members can even take training courses at the German Academy for Aviation and Travel Medicine with miles.

Members can also choose to donate their miles to charities such as HelpAlliance, Living Lakes and SOS Kinderdorf International.

Along with Star Alliance airline partners, Miles & More partners with Air Astana, Air Dolomiti, Air India, Air Malta, Avianca, Cirrus Airlines, Condor, Ethiopian Airlines, Jat Airways, Jet Airways, Luxair, Mexicana, Qatar Airways and TACA.

Miles & More features a lengthy hotel partner list including Accor, Best Western, Fairmont, Global Hotel Alliance, Hyatt, Gran Melia, Hilton, InterContinental Group Hotels, Ibis Hotel, Jumeirah, Kempinski, Le Meridien, Marriott, Omni, Orbis, Carlson Hotels, Starwood, Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, The Leading Hotels of the World, Wyndham and many others. Most offer members 500 miles per stay but the amount earned can vary.

Car rental partners include Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt offering 500 miles per car rental.

Co-branded credit cards are offered for members in Germany and elsewhere. The Lufthansa Miles & More Credit Card offers one mile for every euro spent and a welcome bonus of up to 4,000 miles for members living in Germany. Cardmembers' miles will not expire as long as they are a cardholder. There is also a card marketed exclusively to women who are Miles & More members. The Woman's Special Lufthansa Miles & More Credit Card offers benefits deemed of interest to female cardmembers.

Twenty-five credit cards are offered for residents of countries outside of Germany including a card for members in the U.S. called the Premier Miles & More World MasterCard, which offers a welcome bonus of 20,000 miles and two miles per dollar spent on Miles & More integrated partners and one mile per dollar spent elsewhere, an annual companion ticket and no mileage expiration. If you do not qualify for the Premier card, you may receive the World MasterCard that comes with a 15,000 miles welcome bonus and one mile per dollar spent on all purchases.

Other partners include dining, shopping, insurance, automobile club, airport parking, financial, telecommunications and again, too many partners to mention by name here.

Miles & More has a three-tiered elite program and when members reach a tier, that membership will be valid for two years. For example, if you qualify in July 2011, your elite-tier membership is valid until February 2014. Members are welcomed into Frequent Traveller status at 35,000 status miles in a calendar year and receive the following benefits: miles do not expire; 25 percent bonus award, status and HON Circle miles; waitlist priority; business class check-in; free baggage allowance; business airport lounge access and an exclusive service telephone hotline.

Members are welcomed into Senator status at 100,000 miles in a calendar year (130,000 miles for residents of Germany) and along with all of the benefits of Frequent Traveller status, they receive: two upgrade eVouchers on attainment of status and every time status is extended, up to 48 hours prior to departure booking guarantee, first class check-in, additional free baggage allowance, priority baggage handling, access to Senator and Star Gold airport lounges, improved flight award availability, companion award, Senator Premium Award and Senator members can overdraw their Miles & More account temporarily by as much as 50,000 miles when redeeming for an award.

The topmost tier is HON Circle Member offered at 600,000 HON Circle miles spread over two successive calendar years. Members in this level receive all the benefits of Frequent Traveller and Senator levels plus six instead of two upgrade eVouchers on attainment of status and every time status is extended; up to 24 hours prior to departure booking guarantee; highest waitlist priority; Lufthansa First Class, SWISS First and Austrian HON Circle Lounge access; access to first class terminal irrespective of service class; limousine transfer service; personal assistance; best flight award availability; service hotline available 24/7; mileage advance up to 100,000 miles and a Senator partner card for spouse/partner. Companion awards at 50 percent off are offered to Senator and HON Circle members. Credit card annual fees are reduced for Frequent Travellers and waived for Senator and HON Circle members.

Miles & More has an unpublished, invitation-only lifetime elite program currently offered to those who are 60 or older who have held Senator status for at least 10 consecutive years and have earned at least one million status miles. The criteria for an invitation to this unpublished benefit can change at any time.

Any miles not redeemed within 36 months of the date of accrual will expire at the end of that quarter unless you have a Miles & More credit card or have Miles & More elite status. Missing mileage can be claimed within six months from the activity date with original boarding pass plus copy of passenger receipt, or original hotel or rental car invoice. Should the departure airport and final destination be located in different award zones, (open-jaw flight), the higher award zone always applies and is used for mileage redemption. A stopover can be part of a flight award if you are booking an award that touches two or more regions on your reservation. Awards may be given to anyone the member chooses.

Members must be at least two years of age and reside in a country in which the Miles & More program is available. You cannot pool miles or transfer miles between Miles & More members but you can purchase up to 12,000 miles per year for yourself as a gift starting at 1,000 miles for 35 euros.

Members can access customer service through an online form. We emailed on a Wednesday at 11:23am from the U.S. and received an auto reply with an incident number almost immediately and received an answer by 2:53pm the same day. You can also call or email local customer service centers and access an FAQ and search function online to help answer the most common questions. As with most programs, we hear both good and not so good things about the customer service. Several members mentioned that the service is only as good as the person who answers the phone--so call again if you don't get the information you need when you first call. After making our way through a phone tree for a minute, our test call was answered in four minutes by a knowledgeable Miles & More representative.

The Miles & More website allows members to book awards, monitor their accounts and generally do most of what is expected of a world-class frequent flyer program website. There are still times, however, when members will need to pick up the phone, such as when attempting to book multi-segment, one-way or multi-class award flights or for awards on some partner airlines.

The elite level stands out as a good feature of the program and all members benefit from the stellar partner lineup with many options to earn and burn miles. The program also runs frequent promotions to keep their membership based engaged in the program. Miles & More has a program for kids and teens called JetFriends featuring access to the JetFriends online community, special JetFriends Club Card and more.

Miles & More has a reputation for high fuel surcharges and taxes on award tickets to the point that it always pays to check the cost of paying out of pocket before booking an award or consider paying the extra 15,000 miles to pay for your fees and taxes with miles. And although the elite-level program offers many benefits, unlimited flight upgrades is not one of them, nor is a hefty flight bonus. Members must book carefully with airline partners because not all flights will earn miles.
