Czech Airlines OK Plus

(10 ratings)

This program was reviewed and rated by our editors in November 2007. Changes in the program past this date are possible, especially program partner information. We recommend you subscribe to the #1 source of frequent flyer information, Inside Flyer Magazine, to get the most current information possible.

Prague, birthplace of Franz Kafka, home to the picturesque Charles Bridge, St. Vitus Cathedral and Czech Airlines. Founded in 1923, Czech Airlines (CSA) is the national air carrier of the Czech Republic and connects the country's capital and largest city, Prague, to most European capitals and to destinations in North America, Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. The airline joined the SkyTeam alliance on March 25, 2001.

In an effort to rejuvenate the airline's image and position itself as a modern airline, Czech Airlines recently updated its logo. With the new logo, the airline hopes to eliminate its post-communist image, which it believes many foreigners associate with a lower standard of service. The new logo will include the words "Czech Airlines" to make it easier to identify for foreign customers, who now make up 80 percent of CSA's passengers.

OK Plus, Czech Airlines' frequent flyer program, was established on April 15, 1992 and now has more than 250,000 members.

Members earn one mile per mile flown and a minimum of 1,000 miles for international flights and 500 miles for domestic flights. Members traveling in booking classes N, S, V and W earn 50 percent of miles flown, members flying in booking classes Y and M earn 50 percent bonus miles and members flying in business class earn 100 percent bonus miles. For an unspecified length of time, members earn 1,000 miles for online bookings. If you recommend a new member to OK Plus, both you and the new referred member can earn 2,000 bonus miles. Members can also earn miles for flying Air Malta and SkyTeam partner airlines, with credit card purchases, hotel stays, phone service and dining.

A roundtrip award on Czech Airlines or partner airlines is 15,000 miles in coach and 25,000 miles in business for flights within the Czech Republic and Slovakia (Europe 1). Flights between Europe 1 and other destinations in Europe require between 20,000 and 30,000 miles in coach; 30,000 and 45,000 miles in business class. A flight between Europe 1 and North America is 50,000 in coach and 80,000 in business class. Members can mix booking classes when redeeming for award travel. The SkyTeam Around-the-World award ticket can be redeemed for 140,000 miles in coach and 220,000 miles in business class.

Members flying on Czech Airlines can book one-way flights, but a one-way award is more than half of the miles required for a roundtrip. A one-way trip between the Czech Republic and other destinations in Europe is between 10,500 and 21,000 miles in coach and 17,500 and 31,500 in business class. One-way to North America from the Czech Republic is 35,000 in coach and 56,000 in business class.

Upgrades on Czech Airlines flights are available from Y and M class tickets. A one-way upgrade within the Czech Republic and Slovakia requires 5,000 miles. An upgrade from the Czech Republic to other countries will require between 10,000 and 20,000 miles.

Miles can be redeemed for up to 10 kg excess baggage allowance, which can be used on Czech Airlines' flights only. Each segment requires between 7,000 miles and 15,000 miles, so to take an extra 10 kg roundtrip from Moscow-Prague-New York would require 34,000 miles, a hefty price for heavy luggage. For 5,000 miles, members can obtain one-day Crystal Lounge access at the Prague Airport.

If you'd like to pretend you're a pilot, you can redeem between 70,000 and 80,000 miles for a two-hour lesson on a flight simulator with an experienced instructor, which includes an hour-long simulated flight. Members looking for adventure can also redeem 80,000 miles for you and a guest to enjoy a one-hour balloon flight.

Miles can be redeemed for car rentals with Avis, Hertz and Sixt. One-day rentals start at 15,000 miles, weekend rentals start at 20,000 miles and weekly rentals start at 40,000 miles. Members can redeem 30,000 miles for an annual subscription to the Hospodarske noviny newspaper.

Airline partners include Air Malta and SkyTeam airlines Aeroflot, Aeromexico, AirEuropa, Air France, Alitalia, Continental Airlines, Copa Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Kenya Airways, Korean Air, KLM and Northwest Airlines. China Southern will become a partner on Nov. 1, 2007.

Hotels that partner with OK Plus include Hilton, Accor, Golden Tulip, Park Inn, Ramada and Worldhotels. Members earn between 100 and 500 miles per stay or one mile per dollar spent on room rate. Members staying at Movenpick can earn 500 miles per night on eligible rates.

Members who are permanent residents of the Czech Republic can apply for the CSA co-branded Classic or Gold MasterCard offered by Citibank. Classic cardmembers receive 5,000 bonus miles with first purchase, 250 bonus miles per year and two miles per CZK 100 spent on all other purchases. Gold cardmembers receive 10,000 bonus miles with first purchase, 500 bonus miles per year and four miles per CZK 100 spent on all other purchases.

If you pay with your Diners Club/CSA credit card, you can earn 500 miles per 1,000 CZK spent on Sky Shop purchases and 100 miles per 1,000 CZK spent in the Czech Airlines' duty free shops in Prague and Karlovy Vary.

Residents of the Czech Republic and Slovakia can take advantage of the Diners Club credit card and receive a 5,000-mile welcome bonus and one mile per CZK 50 spent. Members who use a Komercni Banka payment card can earn between 2,000 and 3,000 miles for signing up and receiving the card.

Members can earn 25 miles per CZK 100 spent dining at restaurants in the AirRestaurant network. Purchasing CSA Airtours will net 1,000 bonus miles for the first tour and 100 miles for every 1,000 CZK spent. You can also earn 100 miles for every 1,500 CZK spent in Datart electronic stores.

Members can earn between 375 and 1,000 miles per rental with Avis, Hertz or Sixt and receive discounts of up to 30 percent off standard rates.

Residents living in the Czech Republic and Slovakia can convert Shell Smart points into miles at the rate of 1,399 points to 1,000 miles. Members can also exchange 10 Sparky points into 100 miles. Mobile phone users can convert 02 points into miles at an exchange rate of one to one. If you use any of the Ceska sporitelna credit cards, you can convert points from its Bonus program into OK Plus miles.

As a member of the SkyTeam, all miles earned from flights on Czech Airlines and the SkyTeam airlines count towards elite status. Members earning 25,000 miles or flying 15 segments within a calendar year will receive an OK Plus Silver Card, the first tier in a two-tiered elite program. Silver Card benefits include 25 percent bonus miles, priority waitlist, priority check-in and boarding and preferred seating. When flying on Czech Airlines, members also receive a 10 kg excess baggage allowance, Crystal lounge access and the possibility of complimentary upgrades from many booking classes on shorter routes and reduced-mileage upgrades on longer routes.

Members who earn 50,000 miles or fly 30 segments will be given an OK Plus Gold Card and receive 50 percent bonus miles on flights. In addition to Silver Card benefits, Gold Card holders receive guaranteed reservation with 24-hour advance notice, free access for members and a guest to SkyTeam airport lounges and priority baggage handling. Members also receive the possibility of complimentary upgrades from most booking classes on all Czech Airlines flights and an additional 20 kg baggage allowance.

Award tickets are valid for one year from date of issue and can be issued to anyone. Changes to an award ticket can be made at any Czech Airlines' office free of charge. Miles do not expire, but membership will be terminated and accrued miles eliminated if no account activity occurs within three years. Up to 15,000 miles per year can be purchased for yourself or someone else. Miles start out at CZK 1,400 per 1,500 miles and decrease in price per mile the more you buy. Miles cannot be pooled between members.

Members can call or e-mail the service center. Members' accounts of customer service have been mixed; when we called the OK Plus Service Center, we encountered a knowledgeable and courteous representative. OK Plus sends an account statement either via e-mail or by post according to your preference. If you choose electronic correspondence, you will receive monthly account statements and if you choose to receive correspondence by post, you will receive quarterly statements. Each member will be sent the OK Plus newsletter every three months.

Requests for awards cannot be made online but you can check your account balance and make changes to your contact information. Missing credit requests for Czech Airlines flights, car rentals and most hotel partners can be made online. To request credit from flights on partner airlines and other non-airline partners, members must mail or fax documentation to the service center.

Ask any elite member what they value most in an elite program and one of the first things you'll hear is upgrades. Elite members report a high success rate of landing upgrades on CSA flights -- one member reports a higher than 90 percent success rate on intra-European flights. There are no fees when making changes to award tickets and CSA offers frequent bonuses on selected routes. While many airlines have eliminated or reduced bonuses for online bookings, CSA offers members 1,000 miles for booking online.

Czech Airlines made changes to its mileage accrual chart earlier this year and some booking classes now earn 50 percent fewer miles. Members cannot redeem miles for hotel stays and awards cannot be redeemed online. While one-way awards are available, they require considerably more miles than half of a roundtrip award. OK Plus does not offer a third elite level for their most frequent customers.
