Late-Breaking Program News Northwest Airlines Raises Fees
(Posted: Jul 9, 2008)

Northwest Airlines is the latest airline to add a $15 fee for a first checked bag, matching the new baggage policies of American Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways. The new fee applies to tickets sold on or after July 10, 2008 for travel beginning Aug. 28, 2008 on flights within the U.S. and between the U.S. and Canada. Elite members and full-fare coach passengers are exempt from the new fee.

Northwest is also adding a service fee on award tickets redeemed on or after Sept. 15, 2008. WorldPerks will charge $25 for domestic tickets, $50 for transatlantic tickets and $100 for transpacific travel. About the new fee, Doug Steenland, President and CEO of Northwest Airlines said, "This is a temporary service fee to partially offset our fuel costs. As fuel comes down, we will re-visit this decision." All members, including elite members, will be required to pay the service fee, which is described as a fuel surcharge on the WorldPerks Award Travel Fees chart.

Northwest is also raising its call center fees. The call center ticketing fee is now $25 and the call center assistance fee for award travel is $20. Platinum and Gold elite members are exempt from call center ticketing fees.

And if you make any changes to your ticket, expect to pay at least an additional $50. Beginning July 9, 2008, the fee for domestic non-refundable ticket changes will increase from $100 to $150 and international ticket change fees will increase by $50 to $150 per ticket, depending on class of service and other restrictions.
