US Airways Eliminates Elite Bonus
(Posted: Jun 12, 2008)
US Airways is eliminating a standard feature included in almost every frequent flyer elite program. One of the perks of elite status is earning bonus miles on flights but beginning August 6, US Airways Preferred members will no longer earn extra miles when flying on US Airways or partner airlines.
If you, like us, are wondering why US Airways made this decision, the Web site states: "Miles issued through the Dividend Miles program represent a real and significant economic cost. Each mile that is issued can result in the loss of revenue for the company. By reducing the number of bonus miles issued, US Airways is in a better position to withstand the impact of record fuel prices."
Other changes to the Dividend Miles program include the addition of a $25, $35 or $50 award ticket processing fee (depending on your flight route) for tickets booked on or after August 6, 2008.

As Chariman Preferred FF and a resident of Phoenix, I used to think that first class upgrades and direct flights to most of my destinations were worth putting up with the vagaries of US Airwaways service. I hate to say it, but Southwest is looking better and better every day, and they are showing much more appreciation for loyalty.
Not only are they slowly making it more difficult and expensive to redeem miles, but now US Airways management assumes that its FF already have enough miles. We may not be terribly voacal, but I for one will be voting with my seat.

I WISH I would have known this before I took 3 flights to Vegas this year, and specifically chose these guys.... I thought using US Arwys was a good idea, until I read that link at the bottom of the story. $2 for a soda!? Closing the lounge in BWI? No preferred mileage credit? $2 for a soda???? Forget it. I'm looking for another airlines. Suggestions please.

As Chairman Preferred FF, I fly all over the world. No body does it worse than the Americans. And none of the Americans do it worse than USAirways. The business model doesn't work. And trying harder to make a broken model work makes it even worse. Get a brain. Ask Singapore Airlines. Their planes are jammed and guess what? They charge a premium. But they also provide premium service. You don't have to run a cattle car to stay in business. Try raising ticket prices across the board, treat us like humans and stop with the nickel and dime nonsense. It is offensive to everyone, particularly to your valued business customers and Elite FF'ers. Why do you assume all your customers are bottom feeders who will put up with being treated like vermin? The K-Mart approach doesn't work. The mindset is amazing in an era of supposedly enlightened management. Don't bit the hand that feeds you!

Being a Chairman's Preferred FF since the program's inception and having flown millions of miles on USAirways (yes millions), I find this change in the FF program insulting and degrading to their FF. American once tried the reduction in bonus miles, but changed their minds for their elite members. Driving off the eilte members will really reduce revenue for an airline already ailing, and I fly them every week. I hope the reconsider this punitive decision.
